 We would like to welcome you to the new homepage of the Australian Worm Growers Association Vermiculture Inc (AWGAVI).
We were established to promote the farming of earthworms for use in the recycle organic waste at home. We have developed a network of worm farmers across Australia each providing a vast pool of knowledge in
the establishment and production of earthworms.
Members to the organisation are all worm growers at one point and can offer anyone
interested in using earthworms for a multitude of applications. Membership provides access to educational assistance and practical expertise.
To truly promote earthworms and their use in the wider community the key will be
the education of the hows, what's and whys to the use of earthworms. To this the
committee has decided to create an educational section to our webpage. For
further information please contact AWGAVI and a professional commercial worm
grower will be able to assist you with your enquiry.
Organic waste is an extremely valuable resource. Of the 43,777,000 tonnes of
waste produced in 2006/07, 20,060,000 of this total was organic waste,
13,640,000 tonnes of which ended in landfill. Of all organic waste produced in
Australia 68% is sent to landfill. It is projected that by 2020/21 Australia
will produce 81,072,593 million tonnes of waste - at current recovery rates this will equate to a total of 27,200,000 tonnes of organic waste being land filled.
When a climate change treaty is reached the annual cost of the emissions alone from the landfilling of organic waste will cost Australia $623,000,000 each year (calculated at $23 per tonne of CO2-e and a minimum of 1:1 ratio of waste to emissions).
